Sex Abuse detectives are working closely with Patrol officers to ensure that registered sex offenders on parole or probation for crimes against minors are in compliance with Halloween restrictions.  Detectives will provide addresses of registered sex offenders to officers for potential verification checks.  The Board of Probation and Parole has issued the following guidelines for these offenders:

• No fall or Halloween decorations should be displayed inside or outside of the offender’s home.
• Neither the offender nor anyone else inside the residence will open the door to trick-or-treaters on Halloween night.  Doors must remain closed with porch lights off and drapes/blinds shut.
• No treats or candy are to be given out by the offender or by anyone at the offender’s place of residence.  The offender is not allowed to visit places/events where treats are distributed.
• The offender is not allowed to wear a costume.
• The offender is not allowed to accompany any child, including their own, to trick-or-treat.
• The offender is not allowed to visit any corn maze, haunted house, hayride, or other seasonal activities.
• The offender is not allowed to be at any function where children are present, even if the event is at a private residence.

Anyone who suspects a sex offender is not in compliance with these Halloween restrictions is urged to contact the Sex Offender Registry at 880-3610.

Additionally, Police officers will be on Halloween alert in neighborhoods throughout Nashville Friday evening and will take very seriously any attempts to scare citizens by giving children harmful candy items or by committing any type of disruptive behavior.

 Parents are urged to closely monitor their children’s trick-or-treat activities and to keep in mind these safety recommendations:

• Trick-or-treaters should carry flashlights.
• Persons should give, and children should accept, only wrapped or packaged candy.
• Children should bring their treats home for adult inspection before the candy is eaten.
• Children should wear light-colored clothing that is short enough to prevent tripping. Reflective tape should be added.
• Make sure children can see well enough through their face masks. Consider make-up or face paint as an alternative.
• Keep costumed children away from pets, particularly dogs.  The pet may not recognize the child, become frightened and react in a vicious manner.
• Choose costumes that are flame retardant, and use props, such as magic wands and swords made out of foam rubber or cardboard, rather than metal or wood.
